Women’s Health Leading the Readers’ Interest Poll

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

In my first week writing Her Daily News, I posted a poll of readers’ interests to find out what vistors are looking for from HDN. The topic base is so broad that I am attempting to discover what it is you want from this site. It has been about three weeks now, and these are the results of the poll so far:

  • Current World News: 21%
  • Shopping/Products/Offers: 11%
  • Women’s Health: 32%
  • Women in History: 16%
  • Women’s Rights Around the World: 16%
  • Other Response: Profiles of World-Changing Women: 5%

It is clear that health issues are a big concern for women right now. I will attempt to bring you more of the latest research in health and wellness, as well as possible product reviews and offers. This doesn’t mean in any way that I will not report on the other important issues for ladies, including current world events. But with the help of my readers, we can take this site in the direction you want it to go. I hope you will continue to visit Her Daily News and let me know how I am doing. The Girls’ Water Cooler is open to all topics and all points of view, so please chime in any time!

If you haven’t voted in the poll yet, it is still open. Simply enter your votes below, or submit an Other response with a topic not listed that you would like to know more about.

3rd Grader Mary Mwanisawa to Get First Health Check-up

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

When Mary and Joseph Mwanisawa agreed to travel over 15,000 miles to attend the second annual gala to benefit the Kids of Kilimanjaro school lunch program, they thought they were going to America only to tell their story about how much the program was improving their community. They didn’t know they would also be receiving a full medical examination — the first of their lives.

What 1 Thing Would Make Your Daily Labor Easier?

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

In light of the USA celebrating Labor Day on Monday, September 3, I thought I would ask my readers. What is the one thing about your job that is really irritating, annoying, or nerve-wracking that other people could fix easily? Often times there are small things that happen that normally we would not notice. However, when it becomes a frequent or even daily occurance because it is part of your job, the small things can become dreadful things.

Afghanistan City Helping Women Own Businesses

Friday, August 31st, 2007

600afghanistan_woman.jpgAfgha.com has reported that five women-owned stores in the city of Mazar-e Sharif are doing well. The women’s affairs department helped the women set up their retail shops, something almost unheard of in Afghanistan.

The success of these lady-owned and operated business led to the provincial governor laying the foundation stone for the Women’s Garden, a planned shopping center for 200 more stores. Men as well as women will be allowed to shop there, though it was pointed out that, “officials say their behaviour will be closely monitored.” As expected, there have been some disagreements among religious leaders over the rights of these females, but there are many local clerics who see it as a positive step.

Virtual Book Tour: Woman Submit! Christians and Domestic Violence

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

jocelyn_andersen.jpgI write two blogs here for 451 Press. My other blog is at Life as a Christian Woman. Although I try to keep the two separate, I wanted to give Her Daily News readers a chance to join in today’s activities “over there.”

Jocelyn Andersen is the author of “Woman Submit! Christians & Domestic Violence.” She is appearing on Life as a Christian Woman today to talk about her book and answer questions and comments from readers. She is a domestic abuse survivor and has joined in the movement for churches to catch up with the secular world in providing support and safety for battered women. In Jocelyn’s case, her husband was a minister. The recent case of televangelist Juanita Bynum being attacked by her husband, also a minister, tells us that this problem is more widespread than we would like to think among Christian marriages.

I hope you will join us today to welcome Ms. Andersen and join in the conversation. Women around the world are fighting for their lives, and for the rights to be more than property and possessions in their relationships. The churches have a responsibility to help in this fight. It is through people like Ms. Andersen, and events like her appearance today, that will enable us to begin networking the resources and willing workers to bring about change not only in the Christian communities, but for any woman is living in fear for her life.

Arab-American Psychologist Speaks Her Mind on War

Monday, August 27th, 2007

I actually found this clip while searching through the online site Lankaweb, a news and opinion site on Sri Lanka. The video clip features Arab-American psychologist Wafa Sultan on an Al-Jazeer broadcast. Clearly, her views expressed in the video could put her life jeopardy. At the same time, her speech is a bold statement made by a woman who has seen and studied both the effects of oppression and of freedom, not just in the war between Iraq and America, but for women around the world.

The best explanation ever

Here is One impressive woman making a huge difference with her powerful and amazing statements on Al jazeera television. The woman is Wafa Sultan, an Arab-American psychologist from Los Angeles. I would suggest watching it ASAP because I don’t know how long the link will be active. This film clip should be shown around the world repeatedly !

Music in Mute: Deafness Doesn’t Silence This Musician

Friday, August 24th, 2007

At age 6, Darlene took her first guitar lesson. By 25, she was playing in a band and recording music. Last March, she purchased new digital, programmable hearing aids. “Since I have had this problem all my life, I don’t view it as challenging so much.” Her problem is congenital deafness.

I interviewed Darlene Hagler about her upcoming performance for Art in the Park in Mint Hill, NC. She will be a solo performer on Sunday, August 26, 2007, for the festival which started three years ago to showcase artists, musicians, and local talents. 20 years ago, Darlene and her band traveled all over North Carolina and recorded a couple of demos. “We even had fans!” she quipped. Adult life and responsibilities crept in and the band went their separate ways, but Darlene still enjoys playing.

Don’t Give the Gift of Camel

Monday, August 20th, 2007

camel.jpgFor an Australian woman who loved exotic animals, the camel she received as a gift for her 60th birthday was exciting. Apparently, no one knew how exciting.

The juvenile male camel is believed to have been searching for a mate when the 330-pound animal knocked his mistress to the ground and lay on top of her. The woman was found dead on her ranch in Queensland, Australia. Camels are described by Arab.net as unpredictable at best. A fully grown camel can weigh over 1500-pounds. Although used widely as work animals and in racing, like any creature they do not always make good pets.

Until then, I will post them as they come in. In addition to news you know about, I also invite you to Ask Me when there is a story you want to know more about. Occasionally, I will post op-ed and humor pieces as the notion strikes me. I also intend to scour the web for offers, freebies, product samples and events you can take part in.

Teenage Girls have the Weight of the World on their Shoulders

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

fat.jpgThis article really hit home with me. In the Houston Chronicle today, there is a story about a study done by the University of Texas that shows teenage girls who are obese are half as likely to attend college as their slimmer counterparts. The study also showed that obese teenage girls were more likely to engage in reckless behaviors such as skipping school, underage drinking and drug abuse. Such acting out stems from feelings of isolation. What I found most poignant in the article was how the societal stigma of appearance is not the same for obese boys.

Today is my birthday and I’m venturing into my mid-twenties. But it wasn’t too long ago that I was a teenage girl in high school facing the same pressures discussed in this article. For girls, even at an early age, looks and weight become the focus. Once you fall outside of the desired parameters for looks in society, the change begins. It is a shame that these girls are judged by their looks before they have even had time to develop them. What is even more of a shame is that these outside factors are affecting the educational choices of these young women. Because you don’t wear a certain size means you aren’t supposed to be successful in life? This shows me how much young women tie beauty to self-worth. The unfortunate part is that beauty and outward appearance will fade and can be taken away. It’s what you learn, give to others and grow into as a person that makes you special. Those types of lessons often come with life experience and wisdom, both of which you do not need outer beauty to attain.
