Don’t Give the Gift of Camel
For an Australian woman who loved exotic animals, the camel she received as a gift for her 60th birthday was exciting. Apparently, no one knew how exciting.
The juvenile male camel is believed to have been searching for a mate when the 330-pound animal knocked his mistress to the ground and lay on top of her. The woman was found dead on her ranch in Queensland, Australia. Camels are described by Arab.net as unpredictable at best. A fully grown camel can weigh over 1500-pounds. Although used widely as work animals and in racing, like any creature they do not always make good pets.
Owning exotic animals has for centuries been viewed as a sort of status symbol. Although camels are not a first choice for most women, monkeys, big cats and other cute fuzzies are appealing. The awww-factor tends to outweigh common sense. Unfortunately, the Australian woman is the latest of thousands to be killed by awww.
Women run a particular risk from owning male animals. The hormonal changes that occur in the female body also change her scent. A male animal detects these subtleties that often elude the human species. This problem is generally well controlled with dogs and cats. Camels, not so much.
Next time you are shopping for a gift for your 60-year-old mother, skip over the 1500-pound varieties. The animal and the woman will thank you for it.
