How Fares the Fairer Sex? 1st Ed.

by April Gilford

How Fares the Fairer Sex? is a new series that will feature a brief look at some of the top headlines for women. In this first edition, we will look at Reese Witherspoon, Natascha Kampusch, Skinny Bitch, and Leona Helmsley’s mansioleum.

Reese Witherspoon and Avon

reese.jpgReese Witherspoon has been named Avon’s first ever Global Ambassador. According to the Avon website, “Ms. Witherspoon will serve as the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, focusing on breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief initiatives, and she will be the spokeswoman for Avon’s beauty brands and Sales Representatives.” Best known for her brilliant acting in movies like Walk the Line, Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, and Vanity Fair, Ms. Witherspoon will undoubtedly be a great addition to the Avon family.

Natascha Kampusch

After 8 years of being held hostage by her kidnapper, 18-year-old Natascha Kampusch escaped. The Austrian teen was kidnapped in 1998 while walking to school. She was only 10 years old when she vanished in Vienna, triggering a massive search throughout Austria and into neighboring Hungary. She escaped from her captor on Wednesday, and is reported to be reunited with her family. She appears to be in good health and is receiving psychological evaluation. DNA tests are also being conducted to confirm her identity, but family and authorities are certain she is Natascha Kampusch. Her kidnapper graciously committed suicide by throwing himself under a train after Natascha’s escape. For the full story, visit CNN.com.

Skinny Bitch

Although first published in 2005, Skinny Bitch by Kim Barnouin and Rory Freedman continues to top the New York Times Bestseller List for advice. This no-nonsense book on losing weight and living healthy begins with the line, “Are you sick and tired of being fat?” The authors make no apologies for their upfront, outspoken advice — and women love them for it. Now joined by the companion recipe book Skinny Bitch in the Kitch, both books are available as a set on Amazon.com for just $18.54.

Leona Helmsley’s Mansioleum

Yes, Leona Helmsley died Monday and will always be remembered as the “Queen of Mean.” The multi-billionaire spent life with her panties in a wad, unaware (or uncaring) that she was the fantasy target for wanna-be hitmen of the “little people.” But you have to hand it to her — she knows how to repose in style. Her body will spend eternity with her husband in a $1.4 million mansioleum in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetary. True to her “only the little people pay taxes” personality, when the construction of her exclusive resting place began in 2005, it was without the proper permits. After fines were paid and donations made, the building was completed and is already a tourist attraction. Mrs. Helmsley lacked grace, tact, and common decency, but her eternal abode will speak to the ages of what money can buy. I’m thinking the IRS is scrambling a team of its most ruthless auditors as we speak. See pictures of Leona Helmsley’s mansioleum.
